Koh Larn

12°56.011N, 100°52.100E
Anchorage – in 5-8m on sand – on Koh Larn’s pretty western bay is only really suitable for short stays. For longer holding, sailors are advised to anchor on the north bay in 5-10m on a sandy bottom. The bay also lends protection during the southwest monsoon.

Far removed from its noisy mainland neighbour, Koh Larn is a wonderful little island boasting six white sand beaches and excellent watersport opportunities in its azure waters.

Just 7km from Pattaya, Koh Larn – also known as Coral Island – has long been regarded as one of the best island destinations in the Gulf of Thailand.

Despite its modern infrastructure and various accommodation and restaurant options – as well as its proximity to the hustle and bustle of Pattaya – the island has still retained a laid back and friendly atmosphere. Koh Larn’s unique selling point is its six beaches, each of which have white sand, azure waters and breath-taking sea views. The best place for snorkelling is along the outer edge of the reef that fringes Tien Beach on the west coast.

Highlights

Whether you are looking to relax in style on the beach, explore its rugged interior on a motorbike or partake on one of its various watersport activities, Koh Larn has a little bit of everything for everyone. For the best views, head over to Khao Nom viewport near Samae Beach, where you will be treated to views of the island’s rugged interior and, on a clear day, all the way to Pattaya.

Sailing Tips

  • Anchorage on the west coast – at Tien Beach – is in 5-8m of sand and its only recommended for a day stopover.
  • The island’s main northern beach – Tawean Beach – has better anchorage for longer stays as good holding is found in 5-10m on a sandy bottom.
  • Sailors should try to avoid the area around Hin Koh Larn – approximately halfway between Koh Larn and Pattaya. Marker buoys are frequently washed away or dragged during bad weather and should not be trusted.
