Find out more information on applying for boat licenses – both foreign and local.
Existing Licenses
Thailand’s Ministry of Transport – specifically its Vessels Registration Division – is responsible for all Thai license renewals, replacements and submissions. If you are staying in Thai waters for less than six months with a foreign-flagged vessel, it is generally accepted that a foreign sailing license will be adequate, as long as it is suitable for the size of your vessel.
Getting An International License
Thailand is the ideal destination to learn the ropes and obtain a certified boating license. Whether you’re an aspiring skipper or a complete newbie, there are a number of excellent companies that specialise in boating courses – particularly on Phuket – that can help you achieve your desired level. Popular boating courses on include Learn To Sail, Competent Crew, Bareboat Skipper Courses, Yacht Master Coastal, RIB Master and Powerboat Courses.

Getting A Thailand License
To operate a Thai-flagged vessel, a Thai boating license is required, which can be obtained directly through the Ministry of Transport. Please note, however, that the official Ministry of Transport website is not particularly helpful and trying to find any up-to-date official information regarding both foreign and Thai licenses regulations can be frustrating. Instead, we strongly recommend that captains and / or boat owners get in touch with verified agencies and yacht management companies in advance, who will be able to help you navigate through the murky waters of Thai maritime bureaucracy.
